And, well, you get the idea. iMovie is the fastest and easiest way to turn home movies into dazzling Hollywood-style hits.

SmallDVD

If you don’t mind being on the cutting edge, here’s a brand new application that developer Richard Hughes let us know about. SmallDVD is a very simple DVD authoring application — actually a front end to the Unix application dvdauthor. You can select a menu background and font types and sizes. Then select the MPEG-2 videos you want to author and hit Create. SmallDVD creates an ISO image that you can easily burn to DVD.

SmallDVD also requires a free application call iMagine Photo.

BitRocket

BitRocket “is a Native (and open source) BitTorrent client for Mac OS X. At the heart of it’s core resides the powerful libtorrent BitTorrent library. BitRocket is aimed to be a good alternative to other Mac OS BitTorrent clients. (Those clients being Transmission and Azureus.)

This client has some great features including RSS support and an integrated search client.

(PS, If you aren’t familiar with “torrents” take a look at this lens. You’ll be glad you did.)

LiquidCD

LiquidCD makes it easy to burn almost any kind of CD or DVD. Not that this functionality isn’t mostly native to Mac OS X, but LiquidCD puts it right at your fingertips. You can burn an audio, MP3, or picture CD, burn an .iso, .dmg, .cue/bin, or .toast image, or even duplicate a DVD.

This freeware really comes in handy when you want to burn a music or audio file to a disk quickly. For example, I download college lectures from the internet. Rather than copying it to iTunes, making a playlist with the file, burning it to a cd to listen to in my truck, and then deleting the file back out of iTunes, it’s much easier to just drop it in LiquidCD and burn it there. It’s also nice for audiobooks that don’t really need to be in the iTunes library because you’ll never listen to them again.

Tiffany Screens

Tiffany Screens is a presentation tool, able to capture the content of the presenter’s screen and send it to multiple other computer screens at the same time. Any computer can seamlessly become the presenting computer, no matter if connected wirelessly or through an Ethernet cable.
The self-contained solution does neither require nor use a server. It automatically detects all computers on a local network, running the software and those computers can watch the presentation projected onto their screens. Best of all, with a single button click, any computer can switch from watching into presenting mode.

If that icon looks Windows-like to you, it’s because this baby can be used on Mac or Windows. This is good for businesses, computer labs and schools.

iRed Lite

As more and more people receive their fancy new Intel Macs, there are bound to be more great freeware apps coming out. iRed Lite is a great example of this.

iRed Lite lets you use your Apple Remote to control other applications on your Mac. It doesn’t replace Front Row, but you can toggle back and forth between the two applications by holding down the Menu button.

Granted, this remote will work with iTunes, Quicktime, etc, out of the box, but the nice thing about this iRed Lite is that there is a nice development area for you to add functionality to other apps as well. I can’t wait to see what people come up with!!

Vidi

Latin for “I saw”, Vidi is a fitting name for an application that records video. It’s perfect for recording TV shows through a video capture device because it’s more lightweight than iMovie, and it can be scheduled to record at a certain time, in the background.

It will work with any Firewire capture device, but if you use it with a Formac device, you can also use Vidi to change the channel, adjust video settings, and in some cases record FM radio.

Poisoned

Poisoned could possibly be the daddy of all P2P software on the Mac.There are alot of really neat options and the interface is great. Also, rather then just connecting to one network, it connects to several.

From the project’s site:

Poisoned connects to the FastTrack network (Kazaa, Grokster, iMesh), the Gnutella network (Limewire, Acquisition), and OpenFT. This is all made possible by something called the giFT daemon (http://gift.sf.net), the same people behind the OpenFT network.
